SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman
Maggie Maguire tied the school record for home runs in a single season and Gettysburg polished off a sweep of Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference softball action on Saturday.
Maguire saved the drama until her last at bat of the day in the finale. With runners on second and third, the first-year belted the pitcher's offering over the fence in left-center for her sixth home run of the spring. She tied the mark originally set by Stef Mastropaolo '03 in 2003 and tied by Erin Ober '09 in 2009.
Gettysburg (12-6, 3-1 CC) combined for 28 hits and 23 runs in sweeping Swarthmore (4-14, 0-4 CC). The Bullets dropped eight runs in the third inning of game one en route to a 15-5 victory, while the visitors scored five runs in the last two innings of the nightcap to seal an 8-2 win.
Trailing 3-2 in the opener, Gettysburg sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring eight runs on six hits. The Orange and Blue loaded the bases with no outs before junior
Catrina DelGais hit a run-scoring single up the middle followed by a two-run double down the right-field line by
Sam Bader . Later in the inning, sophomore
Joy Hallfors doubled in a run and came around to score on a two-run single by junior
Adrienne Rahs.
Rahs capped a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with an RBI double as Gettysburg added four more runs in its final at bat. Rahs reached base in all five of her plate appearances, adding two walks and scoring three runs.
Hallfors finished 2-for-5 with two runs and a pair of doubles, while Bader led the team with four RBI on a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
Junior
Lanie Parr earned the decision to improve to 6-3 on the year. She allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk, while striking out eight.
Maguire took center stage in the finale, putting the Bullets on the board initially with a two-out, two-run single in the third inning. Freshman
Abby Ferguson added an RBI single in the next frame to hand the Bullets a 3-0 lead.
Leading just 3-1 heading into the sixth, the visitors added two runs on sophomore
Katie Lang's first career home run. In the seventh, Rahs followed up a walk to senior
Caitlin Bay with a double to set up Maguire's record-tying shot.
Maguire finished 3-for-4 with five RBI in the nightcap. Lang went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Hallfors and Rahs each added a pair of hits.
Sophomore
Taylor Snyder didn't allow an earned run to pick up the win on the mound.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, April 5, with a non-conference doubleheader at Hood College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
