FREDERICK, Md. – The Gettysburg College softball team came up with a split in a non-conference doubleheader at Hood College on Tuesday. The Bullets took the opener 12-1 before falling in the nightcap 5-2.
Gettysburg (13-7) was tied with Hood (6-20) 1-1 heading into the fifth frame of the opening game. That's when the Bullets came alive at the plate, bringing across six runs on five hits and a pair of Blazer errors. Senior
Caitlin Bay singled through the right side to plate the first run and sophomore
Sam Bader added a two-run double later in the inning. Freshman
Abby Ferguson closed the frame with a single up the middle to plate Bader and give the visitors a 7-1 lead.
Gettysburg tacked on five more runs in its final at bat as Ferguson provided the big blow with a two-run double to right. Junior
Lanie Parr retired the final three Hood batters in the bottom of the sixth to close the game. She allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts to improve to 7-3 overall.
The visitors jumped on the board first to start the nightcap as junior
Adrienne Rahs brought home Bay with a single in the opening frame. The lead was short lived, however, as the Blazers used a lead-off triple to jump-start a three-run second inning.
The Bullets closed the gap to 3-2 as junior
Catrina DelGais led off the fourth inning with her first career home run. Lead-off hits also led to more runs for the hosts, with the Blazers padding their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Gettysburg came up short of the comeback despite putting a pair of runners in scoring position in its final at bat.
After going 2-for-3 with four RBI in the opener, Ferguson added a pinch-hit single in the nightcap to finish with three hits. Bay reached base five times with three hits and a pair of walks and scored three runs. DelGais also crossed home plate three times and added a walk to her two hits.
Gettysburg returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University on Thursday, April 7, at 3 p.m.
