ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – St. Mary's (Md.) College struck for two first-half goals and held off a furious barrage by visiting Gettysburg College to pick up a 2-0 win in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday.

Coming off a five-goal outburst against Susquehanna University last time out, Gettysburg (1-2) looked to get on the board early with three shots by on goal by Rachel West in the first 20 minutes. St. Mary's goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz was up to the task, stopping all three attempts en route to a nine-save day.

The Seahawks struck for the match's first score not long after Wirtz's last save as a free kick by Yvonne Latour took a fortuitous carom off a Gettysburg defender into the goal at 23:04. Just 10 minutes later, the hosts added another tally by Tori Eskay to make it a 2-0 advantage.

In the second half, Gettysburg tried to turn up the offense by firing off 13 shots and forcing five corner kicks. But Wirtz held firm in the cage, turning away five attempts, including back-to-back kicks by junior Casey Attanasio in the 70th and 75th minutes.

Gettysburg finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots and led in corner kicks 7-1.

West posted four shots for the Bullets, while Attanasio and sophomore Tara Crowley were each credited with three shots. Senior goalie Allie Rivera made a pair of saves.

Gettysburg takes on Catholic University in a non-conference road affair on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 4:30 p.m.
