WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore
Rachel West scored in the 65th minute to propel the Gettysburg College women's soccer team to a 3-2 non-conference win at Catholic University Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (2-2) wasted no time jumping on the board at Catholic (3-2) as the visitors picked up the first score in the eighth minute when sophomore
Becca Kent kicked in her first goal of the season off a pass from junior
Lindsey Lyons.
The Bullets surged out to a 2-0 lead when junior
Casey Attanasio tallied an unassisted score in the 25th minute.
Catholic answered via a penalty kick by Courtney Orgill in the 35th minute to cut the deficit in half. Just seven minutes later, Kaylre Greaves turned in the equalizer to tie the score. Greaves posted another shot on goal just 20 seconds before the end of the first half, but senior goalie
Allie Rivera came up with the save.
The Cardinals looked to carry the momentum into the second half with four shots in the first 10 minutes. Three were on target, but once again Rivera blocked the way to persevere the tie.
Shortly after a shot by junior
Mackenzie Cobb was saved by Catholic keeper Christina Cassidy, West found the back of the net for her team-best fourth goal of the campaign at 64:16.
Gettysburg's defense held firm the rest of the way, allowing just two off-target shots.
Gettysburg led in shot attempts 18-14 with West taking a team-high four. Attanasio, senior
Sara Montague, and sophomore
Tobi Goss each posted three shots.
Rivera finished the day with four saves, while Cassidy posted six stops for Catholic.
