Women’s Soccer Strikes Late to Sink Ursinus

Allie Rivera posted her 15th career shutout on Saturday.

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Molly Phillips scored in the 87th minute and senior Allie Rivera made four saves to lead Gettysburg to a 1-0 victory at Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference opener for both squads Saturday evening.

Saturday's contest marked the ninth consecutive decision between Gettysburg (3-2, 1-0 CC) and Ursinus (2-4, 0-1 CC) that ended in either a tie or a one-goal outcome, including last season's league playoff matchup in which the Bears advanced to the semifinals via penalty kicks.

Ursinus out-shot the Bullets 11-7 and took twice as many corners (6-3), but the visitors capitalized on a late scoring push. Sophomore Rachel West set the stage with a shot that was blocked, and Phillips cleaned up the carom with her first collegiate goal into the top-right corner at 86:18.

Gettysburg had two early second-half shot attempts thwarted as senior Sara Montague and West were stopped by Kara DiJoseph.

Rivera followed up by turning Ursinus away twice in the second half, both on shots by Kelly Boatwright. The Bullets' senior keeper also stopped Alex Shivers on a pair of attempts in the opening period en route to her first shutout this fall and the 15th of her career. She ranks alone in fourth on Gettysburg's career shutout list.

West and Montague accounted for two shots for Gettysburg. Boatwright led the hosts with three attempts.

Gettysburg continues its conference schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 21, when 20th-ranked Dickinson College visits Clark Field. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
