GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg received three goals from three different players and the Bullets won their season opener, defeating Eastern Mennonite University 3-1 in a non-conference field hockey tilt Friday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Senior
Sarah Cole, junior
Hayward Sawers, and sophomore
Kelly Spieker all scored for the Bullets, who led from start to finish.
Gettysburg was in control early and took the first nine shots of the game. Cole gave the Bullets a 1-0 halftime lead after scoring 9:29 into the contest, converting off a rebound in front of the cage. In the meantime, junior
Megan Feeg saved all three shots she faced in goal.
After sophomore
Alexis Bralow stepped into the cage to start the second half for the Bullets, Sawers put the hosts up 2-0 when she took a pass from the right from sophomore
Liz Baron and tipped it in just 2:05 into the stanza.
The Royals pulled to within one on a Nicole Bencsik goal with 22:11 left, but Spieker iced the win for the Bullets. With 3:42 remaining, junior
Emily Kleinburd sent in a pass from the top, and Spieker struck from the right post to set the final score.
Feeg finished with three saves for the Bullets while Bralow notched five stops. Mary Beth Danaher made eight saves for Eastern Mennonite.
Gettysburg continues its season on Wednesday, when it hosts York (Pa.) College at 4:30 p.m. in another non-conference match-up.
