GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Lebanon Valley College scored a pair of goals five minutes apart in the second half to take down host Gettysburg College 2-1 in Friday's women's soccer season opener at Clark Field.
Despite several early shot attempts by Lebanon Valley (1-0), Gettysburg (0-1) struck first on its own turf following a corner kick from the left side. The loose ball in the box was controlled by sophomore
Rachel West and passed out to the top of the box to classmate
Tobi Goss. Goss carried to the ball to her right and crossed the shot back over to the left side of the goal for the score at 23:12.
The Bullets held the Dutchmen down for the remainder of the opening period, but the visitors pressed the action at the start of the final period and capitalized on a mistake by the hosts. Nicole Snyder swooped through the backfield to swipe the ball away, raced past the defenders, and booted the ball over a diving
Allie Rivera to knot the match at 51:09.
Just five minutes later, Snyder struck again as a ball played out of the backfield bounced over the Gettysburg defenders. The LVC striker had a clear path to the goal and beat Rivera again.
The hosts made several attempts to force overtime with six of their 12 shots coming in the final 15 minutes of play. Perhaps the best opportunity came in the 83rd minute following a corner kick when sophomore
Casey Attanasio's shot inside the box was kicked away by a Dutchmen defender.
Lebanon Valley finished with a 13-12 advantage in shots, while Gettysburg led in corner kicks 7-1. Rivera and LVC keeper Sami Young each finished with three saves.
In Saturday's first affair, Susquehanna University (1-0) overcame a 27-6 deficit in shots to beat John Carroll University (0-1) 2-1. Marissa DeParto accounted for both Crusader goals, netting the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
Action at Clark Field continues Saturday with John Carroll facing Lebanon Valley at 4 and Gettysburg battling Susquehanna at 7.
