GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg shut out its second consecutive Centennial Conference opponent by turning back visiting Dickinson College 2-0 in women's soccer action at Clark Field Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (4-2, 2-0 CC) ended a three-match losing skid to the visitors and sent the defending conference regular-season champs to 0-2 in league play this fall. The Bullets out-shot Dickinson (3-2-1, 0-2 CC) 20-11 and posted a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Gettysburg forced six corner kicks in the opening 30 minutes of the match, including two by senior
Lauren Johnson that nearly found the mark, but were punched away by Dickinson goalie Annie Weichert. The Bullets just missed putting in the first goal in the 26th minute when a header by junior
Lindsey Lyons was knocked away from the cage by a defender.
In the 29th minute, senior
Sara Montague polished off a corner kick by freshman
Meg Castranova with a header to give Gettysburg the 1-0 advantage.
Senior
Allie Rivera kept the shutout intact early in the second half by snagging a shot in front of the cage by Julia Thayer in the 56th minute.
Just six minutes later, the hosts padded the lead following another corner kick. Castranova's pass sailed into the cage from the right side and was headed straight up by a Dickinson defender. Freshman
Molly Phillips used all of her 5-10 frame to jump in the air and knock the ball inside the left post for her second goal in as many contests.
Rivera stopped Dickinson's last shot on goal in the 86th minute to record her second shutout of the season.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when Washington College comes to Clark Field. The contest is set for a 4 p.m. start.
