OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Gettysburg built a 2-0 halftime lead and held off host Stevenson University in the second half en route to a 4-2 victory Wednesday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action.
It was the first-ever meeting in field hockey between Gettysburg and Stevenson.
For the second game in a row, senior
Hayward Sawers posted one goal and one assist for Gettysburg (8-3), which was competing in its final non-conference outing of the season.
Senior
Megan Feeg saved four shots to earn the win in goal for the Bullets and is now tied for fifth in school history in career victories with 24.
Katie Cavanaugh made nine saves for Stevenson (6-9).
Junior
Liz Baron gave Gettysburg a lead it would not relinquish when she sent home a shot from top of the arc with 26:15 left in the first half for her team-best ninth goal of the season. Senior
Ally Duggan followed up with a lob shot off a corner pass from Sawers, and her second goal of the year made it 2-0 with 4:53 showing in the opening half.
The Mustangs made it a one-goal game less than four minutes into the second half when Kaitlyn May struck for her eighth goal of the season. But the Bullets answered with the next two goals to build a 4-1 advantage.
Sawers converted a rebound off her own deflected shot with 22:07 remaining for her seventh goal of the season. Then with 13:10 left, junior
Erica Barbuto scored from 13 yards out for her second goal of the year.
Caitlin Dempsey set the final score for Stevenson on a goal with 4:13 to go.
Gettysburg finished with advantages in shots (21-8) and corners (11-4).
The Bullets return to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when they visit Bryn Mawr College at 3 p.m.
