F&M Strikes Late to Down Men’s Soccer

Bullets fall 3-1 to Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College netted a pair of goals in the final four minutes to get by Gettysburg College 3-1 in Centennial Conference men's soccer action Wednesday night.
 
Franklin & Marshall (12-4, 5-3 CC) jumped on the board early as Chase TenBrook scored off a free kick by Chris Scott just 2:15 into the contest. The Diplomat defense would hold the Gettysburg (6-9-1, 1-6-1 CC) offense at bay in the first half as the visitors managed just one shot in the first 45 minutes.
 
Junior goalie Connor Darrell turned away a shot by Sam Lane early in the final period and the Bullets drove the ball up the field. Following a series offensive forays, freshman Noah Sheetz-Ziegel tallied the equalizer for Gettysburg, knocking in a pass by junior Tyler Shaffer in the 54th minute. The score was Sheetz-Ziegel's team-best third this fall.
 
Neither team would find the net in the next 30 minutes as the opposing goalies combined for five saves. After Franklin & Marshall keeper TJ White stopped a shot by junior Brooks Taylor in the 82nd minute, Darrell turned away an attempt by Sam Lane in the 83rd minute to preserve the deadlock.
 
The Diplomats found the touch in the final four minutes as Mike Irving converted the game-winning goal on a corner kick by Lane in at 86:06. Jared Bomba added the final tally off a pass by Lane with 12 seconds remaining.
 
Franklin & Marshall finished with a 16-8 lead in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Darrell finished with five stops for Gettysburg, while White made a pair of saves for the Diplomats.
 
Gettysburg closes out its season at home against McDaniel College on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. The Bullets will honor their six seniors at halftime.
