GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Juniors
James Rice and
Devin Geiman each scored goals to lead the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Bridgewater College in the season opener at Clark Field.
Gettysburg (1-0) received a strong test in its season opener as Bridgewater (0-1) came out aggressively on offense. Despite several point-blank opportunities, including a shot by Ben Lewis in the 25th minute, the Eagles failed to find the back of the net.
The Bullets jumped on the board in the 28th minute. Junior goalie
Connor Darrell set the stage with a long-goal kick into Bridgewater's side of the field. Junior
Tyler Shaffer controlled the ball just outside the 18-yard line and touched it back to sophomore
Kyle Franks. Franks quickly fed the ball out the left side to Rice, who slammed the shot into the right corner at 27:26.
Gettysburg looked for more offense just a few minutes later with shots by Shaffer and senior
Dan McNamara stopped by Eagle keeper TJ Martin.
Darrell helped keep Bridgewater off the board with two second-half saves in the 63rd and 69th minutes. Just six minutes later, the Bullets struck again as Geiman blasted a shot from near the 30-yard mark into the top of the net at 75:29. Junior
Andrew LaFontaine set the play with a pass from the left side.
Darrell picked up his fourth and final save in the 84th minute to seal his sixth career shutout.
Bridgewater finished with a 19-16 advantage in shots, while Gettysburg held the edge in corner kicks at 5-3.
Shaffer finished with five shots and senior
Andrew McLane tallied four, including two on goal, to lead the Bullets.
Gettysburg visits Misericordia University for a non-conference affair on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.
