GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Tara Crowley booted in her own rebound in the 86th minute to lift Gettysburg College to a 1-0 victory over Catholic University in non-conference women's soccer action at Clark Field on Tuesday.
Gettysburg (3-1) dominated the contest on both sides of the ball, piling up 21 shots and holding Catholic (1-3) to just three shot attempts. The Bullets missed on their first 20 attempts, including Crowley's initial shot that was blocked by a defender. She quickly recovered, knocking the ball into the left side of the cage at 85:38.
Gettysburg had a number of early scoring opportunities but failed to convert. The Bullets tested Catholic goalie Lexi Halperin three times in the opening half, including a shot by sophomore
Brigid Behan just inside the right post at 42:19. Halperin was solid, stopping each attempt to hold the match scoreless.
Halperin added two more saves on shots by junior
Rachel West and sophomore
Mary Kamovitch early in the second period to preserve the shutout. The Cardinals tallied their only shot on goal in the 62nd minute as a long blast by Kelly Henderson sailed into the waiting arms of freshman keeper
Eliza Gray. Halperin picked up her match-high sixth save on an attempt by freshman
Lauren Schapiro in the 79th minute.
Gray picked up her third consecutive shutout on the year thanks in large part to a strong defensive front anchored by junior
Becca Kent, sophomore
Meg Castranova, and freshman
Cailin DiGiacomo.
Schapiro finished with four shots, while Crowley and West each tallied three.
Gettysburg begins its Centennial Conference schedule this Saturday (Sept. 15) when the Bullets play host to Ursinus College at Clark Field beginning at 7 p.m.
