CARLISLE, Pa. – Senior
Hayward Sawers scored a pair of goals just over two minutes apart early in the first half and the Gettysburg College field hockey team topped host Dickinson College 3-1 in a Centennial Conference match-up at Biddle Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Bullets (6-1, 2-0 CC), riding the momentum of a 4-1 upset of then-No. 8 Ursinus College on Saturday, are now off to their best start through seven games since the 1999 team started 13-0.
Senior
Megan Feeg finished with a season-high 11 saves for Gettysburg, with three coming in a 1:03 span early in the second half, while Katy Schlechtweg stopped nine shots for Dickinson (3-4, 0-2 CC).
Sawers put the Bullets on the scoreboard with 21:35 left in the first half, converting a feed from junior
Kelly Spieker. She struck again with 19:31 showing, upping her season goal total to five and marking her third career multi-goal outing.
Dickinson cut the deficit in half when Alex Boorse potted an unassisted tally with 10:26 remaining in the opening period.
Gettysburg doubled up Dickinson in shots (12-6) and corners (6-3) in the first half, but that's when Schlechtweg made six of her saves.
Junior
Liz Baron added an insurance goal for Gettysburg with 12:04 left, scoring unassisted for her fifth goal of the year.
For the game the Bullets outshot the Red Devils 23-16 and held a 12-7 advantage in corners.
Gettysburg continues its season on Saturday, when it visits Washington College in a Centennial Conference affair beginning at 1 p.m.
