Field Hockey vs. Haverford Gallery
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College field hockey team battled 10th-ranked Haverford College to a 2-1 overtime loss Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium in a key Centennial Conference match-up.
The Fords (8-1, 3-0 CC) won it on a goal from Mary Hobbs just 1:17 into the extra session. She took a pass from the right side and scored from the left post as Gettysburg (7-2, 3-1 CC) absorbed its first Centennial Conference loss of the season.
The two sides entered the day tied with Franklin & Marshall atop the conference standings.
Junior
Liz Baron gave the Bullets a 1-0 lead late in the first half. With just 17 seconds left in the opening period, Baron took a corner pass from junior
Hayward Sawers and from the top of the box delivered a well-struck ball past the keeper for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Haverford pulled even with 25:33 to go, when Bryn Bissey tipped in a shot from the right side.
Gettysburg had a chance to win it on the final play of regulation when the Bullets were awarded a corner in closing seconds. But Baron's blast from the top was just wide left and Gettysburg advanced to its first overtime contest since a 2-1 loss to Washington College in the 2010 Centennial Conference playoffs.
Senior goalie
Megan Feeg stopped 10 shots – her third-straight performance of 10 or more saves – for Gettysburg while senior Sydney Hyder made six saves for the Fords.
Haverford outshot the Bullets 20-16 while Gettysburg held a 13-9 advantage in corners.
The Orange & Blue returns to action next Saturday, when it visits Swarthmore College at noon in another Centennial Conference game.
