GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Meg Castranova scored on a corner kick in the 50th minute to lift Gettysburg College to a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Haverford College in women's soccer action Saturday at Clark Field.
Gettysburg (7-2, 3-1 CC) ended a three-match losing streak to Haverford (7-2, 2-1 CC) with the victory. Castranova's game-winner followed a series of offensive strikes by the Bullets to start the second half. After a pair of shot attempts and a corner kick, the sophomore defender put the ball into the top left corner of the net over the out-stretched arms of the Ford goalie at 49:52.
Gettysburg's defense held off Haverford the rest of the way as freshman goalie
Eliza Gray picked up three of her five saves in the final stanza.
The Fords opened with the contest's first score in the 28th minute. Following a corner kick, Meg Boyer put two touches on the ball with the first getting blocked by a defender. She converted the second past Gray to put the visitors up 1-0 at 27:52.
The Bullets wasted no time retaliating with junior
Ashley Miller attempting a shot and then tracking down the ball after it was blocked by a defender. Miller put the ball back in front of the cage where goalie Robin Chernow attempted to pluck it from the air. The ball just made it over the Haverford keeper and crossed the goal line at 30:54.
Haverford finished with a 12-11 edge in shots, but Gettysburg led in corner kicks 6-3.
Gettysburg will face another nationally-ranked foe when No. 23 College of New Jersey travels to Clark Field for a match on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m.
