GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Liz Baron (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) posted her first collegiate hat trick and finished with three goals and one assist to lead the Gettysburg College field hockey team to its fourth straight win, a 6-2 victory over Bryn Mawr College in a Centennial Conference tilt Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Senior Ashleigh Guise (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) added one goal and one assist for the Bullets (6-2, 2-3 CC), who went 4-1 over a five-game homestand.
Baron's hat trick was the second of the season for Gettysburg, as senior Erica Barbuto (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) also accomplished the feat with three goals in a win over York (Pa.) in the team's second game of the year.
The Bullets scored the first five goals of the game and blanked the Owls (3-8, 0-6 CC) over the opening 50 minutes. Senior Alexis Bralow (Philadelphia, Pa./Harriton) stopped five shots and allowed one goal in 65:49 of action before freshman Ronnie Bridges (Kingsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) played the rest of the way, yielding one goal and stopping two shots in her collegiate debut.
Faith Westdorp made seven saves for Bryn Mawr, which was outshot 22-15. Both teams earned eight penalty corners.
Freshman Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored the game's first goal, dribbling upfield into the circle before punching in her eighth goal of the season. She has now scored the most goals by a Bullet first-year since Steph Fisher '00 registered 10 in 1996.
Baron had a hand in each of the team's next three goals. First, she sent a long pass down the left side of the field, and Guise finished it off from left post with 13:56 on the clock for her third goal of the year.
Baron capped the first-half scoring, blasting in a shot from the top of the circle after she took a corner pass from junior Kellyann Walley (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 10:31 showing to make it 3-0 at the intermission.
Baron struck again 3:29 into the second half. Senior Erica Barbuto (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) started the play with a short pass from the left to the center of the circle, and Baron took a quick dribble to evade a defender before drilling in her second-straight goal.
Senior Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) capped Gettysburg's 5-0 run to open the game when she deposited her fifth goal of the year with 24:40 to go. She took a cross from Guise across the goal mouth before beating the goalie from the right post.
Mikah Farbo broke up the shutout for Bryn Mawr when she scored on a penalty stroke with 19:33 remaining.
Baron completed her hat trick with 1:26 showing. With the Bullets in a fast break, freshman Catherine Towers (Midlothian, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) brought the ball down the right side of the field before centering it to Baron, who smacked home a shot in front of the goal to make it a 6-1 game. It was Baron's team-leading ninth goal of the season and the first collegiate point for Towers.
Bryn Mawr set the final score with no time on the clock, when Holly Constants scored off a rebound during a penalty corner.
Gettysburg continues its season on Tuesday, when it visits McDaniel College at 3 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
