CARLISLE, Pa. – Two early second-half goals helped lift No. 22 Dickinson College past visiting Gettysburg College 2-1 in Centennial Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
Dickinson (9-2-1, 3-1-1 CC), which is ranked 22nd by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 12th by D3soccer.com, tested the Gettysburg (2-8-1, 2-2-1 CC) goal often in the opening stanza, forcing a dozen shots with half on target. Senior keeper Connor Darrell (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) turned away all six attempts on goal, including the last by Kyle Schwab with just 15 seconds left in the period.
The Red Devils jumped on the board just 1:56 into the final half as Jamie Martin converted a penalty kick. Following a shot by Gettysburg that was saved by goalie Reed Milbrath, Javier Mena padded the lead following a pass by Alred Hylton-Dei at 48:45.
The Bullets were unable to find the target again until sophomore Noah Sheetz-Ziegel (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) sliced the deficit in half with his team-leading third goal of the season at 84:07. Senior Tyler Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) tallied the assist on the play.
Gettysburg mounted an offensive in the final minutes looking for the equalizer, but Milbrath stopped two shots by junior Parker Delmolino (Monroe, Conn./Fairfield Prep) to seal the decision.
Dickinson owned a 19-12 edge in shots, while Gettysburg led in corner kicks 7-6.
