Volleyball Falls to Muhlenberg, Tops St. Lawrence

Bullets edge St. Lawrence in five sets

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Muhlenberg College took the final two sets to clinch a 3-1 victory over Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference volleyball action Saturday. The Bullets bounced back in the second match of the day, knocking off St. Lawrence University 3-2.
 
Muhlenberg (16-7, 6-1 CC) downed Gettysburg (13-11, 5-2 CC) by scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, and 25-12. The Mules won four of the final five points of the opening set, but the Bullets rebounded in set two, erasing a 17-13 deficit with a six-point run and holding on for the win.
 
The hosts jumped out to early leads in each of the final two frames to clinch the decision.
 
Sophomore Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) led the Gettysburg attack with 13 kills. Senior Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) turned in a dozen kills and eight blocks, while senior Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) tallied 35 assists and 14 digs.
 
Allison Glass posted a double-double for Muhlenberg with 16 kills and 11 digs, while Katherine Boll added 10 kills.
 
Gettysburg and St. Lawrence (16-7) traded blows in the opening four sets. The Bullets took sets one and three by scores of 25-14 and 25-20, respectively, while the Saints won sets two and four 25-18 and 25-19. In the fifth and decisive frame, Gettysburg jumped out to a 5-0 advantage and led 8-2 when the teams switched sides of the net. St. Lawrence sliced the margin to a point (13-12) before back-to-back kills by senior Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and Grevers sealed a 15-12 victory.
 
Cyr and freshman Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) notched career highs with 14 kills apiece. Bergin added 11 digs, while Kuhn nearly pulled off a triple-double with eight kills, 44 assists, and 14 digs.
 
Lexi Brown and Rebecca Dozer paced the Saints with 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
 
Gettysburg hosts Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m.
