Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Aden Twer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) broke the school record for career receiving yards and the Gettysburg College football team won back the Little Brown Bucket, downing Dickinson College 42-7 in Centennial Conference football action Saturday afternoon at a blustery Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
The Bullets (4-5, 3-5 CC), who jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead, won rights to the Bucket for the first time since 2010 and the first time at home since 2005. The Bucket was first presented by trustees of the two schools in 1938.
The game also marked the final home appearance for Gettysburg's 10 seniors, who were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the game.
Twer made five catches for 125 yards and with his second reception of the game – a juggling 46-yarder down the right sideline – he surpassed the former record of 2,114 yards set by Chris Notarfrancesco '95 from 1992-94. Twer also holds school records for career (24) and single-season (12, set in 2011) touchdown receptions. In addition, he moved into third on the school's career receptions list, increasing his total to 113.
Junior
Zach Miller (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) threw for 281 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions on 17-of-23 passing for the Bullets, who outgained Dickinson 454-296. Miller also became just the third player in school history to pass for over 2,000 yards in a season, and his current mark of 2,256 ranks behind only the school record of 2,714 yards set by Matt Flynn '10 in 2009.
Sophomore
Kyle Wigley (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for Gettysburg while junior
Eddie Hutchins (Weston, Conn./Weston) added 58 yards and a career-high three TDs on 19 rushes.
Defensively, the Bullets held Dickinson to 138 rushing yards and 296 total yards – both season-lows for a Gettysburg opponent. Sophomore linebacker
Kodie McNamara (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) racked up a game-high 15 tackles while junior defensive end
Drew Winters (Midlothian, Md./Mountain Ridge) added a career-high 11 hits, including a sack.
Mike Carmella passed for 158 yards to lead the Red Devils (3-6, 3-5 CC) while Teddy Airoldi made a team-high 12 tackles.
The Bullets' offense was in high gear in the early going, as they scored a touchdown on four of their six first-half drives. After Dickinson won the coin toss and deferred, Gettysburg went 71 yards on 13 plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Wigley with 10:55 on the clock. The extra point was blocked and the Bullets led 6-0.
Gettysburg then forced a punt before embarking on an 80-yard march. The drive stalled at the 4-yard line, but when the Bullets came on to attempt a 21-yard field goal, senior holder
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) took the snap and broke for the end zone. He dove just inside the left pylon, and Gettysburg assumed a 13-0 lead following sophomore Robbie Fay's (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) extra point with 4:16 on the clock.
In the meantime, Gettysburg's defense was stifling, and the Bullets would hold the Red Devils to 104 first-half yards and five first downs. Dickinson, which went three-and-out twice, was forced to punt on three of its first-half possessions and turned the ball over on downs on its other two.
After a short Dickinson punt to the Red-Devil-41, the Bullets needed just three plays to strike again, as Hutchins took a pitch left and sprinted down the sideline en route to a 29-yard TD run. LeNoir picked up the snap and raced into the end zone for a two-point conversion, making it 21-0 with 12:14 left in the half.
With the Red Devils pinned deep in their own territory late in the quarter, the Bullets took a pair of timeouts to stop the clock. Dickinson was eventually forced to punt, and Gettysburg's quick-strike offense would convert once again, moving 36 yards on four plays and 33 seconds. With 40 seconds left, sophomore wing
Chris Amicone (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) caught a short pass over the middle, then outmaneuvered several defenders on his way to a 16-yard touchdown and his first career TD reception.
Dickinson put together its only scoring drive on the first possession of the second half, and Shawn Wilson capped the scoring march with a 5-yard touchdown run with 12:00 on the clock. But the Bullets answered on their ensuing possession, going 71 yards on nine plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Hutchins on fourth-and-goal that made it 35-7 with 8:31 to go in the third quarter.
The Red Devils moved deep into Bullet territory on each of their next two drives, but Gettysburg came up with back-to-back stops. Dickinson turned it over on downs at the Gettysburg-16 with 1:58 left in the third quarter, then again at the Bullet-12 with 8:09 to go in the game. In the meantime, the Orange and Blue settled any doubt with an 8-play, 84-yard drive, punctuated by another Hutchins 1-yard touchdown run that set the final score with 14:29 remaining. The march was highlighted by a 59-yard pass from Miller to senior tight end
Patrick McMichael (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton), setting up the Bullets at the Dickinson-11. McMichael was making his first career start and finished with 76 yards and two catches.
Gettysburg concludes its season next Saturday when it visits Franklin & Marshall College in another Centennial Conference game beginning at noon.
