Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) connected on her second homer of the spring and fellow first-year
Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) fanned eight to lead the Gettysburg College softball team to a 5-2 victory over Mitchell College at the Snowbird Tournament on Monday.
Gettysburg (1-4) earned a split on the opening day of its six-game stand at the Snowbird Tournament. The Bullets managed just four hits in a 4-1 loss to Juniata College to open the day. Katie Lang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) drew a lead-off walk and came around to score on a double by sophomore
Alexa Katz (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside).
Juniata added another home run in the sixth to pad its lead. Senior
Taylor Snyder (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out four.
Gettysburg jumped on the board in the first inning against Mitchell as senior
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) reached on a single and came around to score on a base hit by Zengel. The Bullets added an unearned run in the third before Mitchell came back to tie the game with two unearned runs in the fifth.
The Bullets answered in the top half of the next inning as senior
Lindsey Peragallo (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) plated two runs with a single to center field. Gettysburg added another tally in the seventh with Zengel knocking her second homer of the spring to right field.
Zengel finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Hallfors and Peragallo each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Fox retired the side in the second, third, and seventh innings. The first-year hurler struck out the side to close the game. She allowed five hits and two walks to go with her season high in strikeouts.
Gettysburg resumes action on Tuesday from Myrtle Beach with games against Albertus Magnus College and Norwich University at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
