MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Maddie Galdi (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) fired a five-inning no-hitter against Daniel Webster College and junior Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) blasted a grand slam against Mitchell College as the Bullets softball team picked up two big victories on Tuesday at the Snowbird Tournament.
 
The weather switched things up for Gettysburg (3-4), which was originally slated to play two different teams. But the change in the schedule led to a historic day for the Bullets as the squad downed Daniel Webster 11-0 and beat Mitchell 12-0.
 
In the opening game, Galdi tossed a gem in her collegiate debut, allowing just four walks while striking out seven. The first-year struck out the side in the first inning and allowed only one runner to reach second base in the game.
 
At the plate, Gettysburg's bats were popping with sophomore Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) clearing the bases with a triple in the second. Tighe would add a run-scoring single in the fourth as part of a career-high four RBI day.
 
Maguire doubled in another run in the third before the bats exploded in the bottom of the fourth for seven runs. Junior Abby Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) provided the highlight blow with a two-run homer to right-center.
 
Galdi's no-hitter was the first by a Bullet since Beth McCullough '10 blanked Dickinson College over fiving innings on April 8, 2009.
 
Tighe, Maguire, sophomore Alexa Katz (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), and freshman Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) each recorded two hits for the Bullets.
 
The pitching staff was nearly as good against Mitchell as freshman Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) and senior Taylor Snyder (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) combined for a one-hitter. A lead-off single to start the game and an error in the third led to the only base-runners in the contest. Fox struck out three in the first four innings to improve to 2-1 on the year, while Snyder fanned one in her only inning of work.
 
The Bullets didn't open the floodgates offensively until the third inning. Senior Katie Lang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) brought in two runs with a double and then scored on a single by Ferguson as part of a five-run third. Gettysburg added two more in the fourth, including an RBI single by Maguire.
 
In the top of the fifth with one run already crossing the plate, the bags were packed for Maguire. The junior blasted her second home run and first career grand slam over the fence in left to set the final margin of victory. The blast was the 12th of Maguire's career, leaving her one short of the school record.
 
Maguire's grand slam was the first by a Bullet since Abbe Miller '08 cleared the bags against Juniata College on May 23, 2006. Ironically, that day also featured a no-hitter as Kristy Rubino '09 held the Eagles without a hit in the nightcap of a 5-0 win.  
 
The Bullets pounded out 12 hits against Mitchell with every starter recording a base knock. Tighe crossed home three times thanks to a pair of hits, including her second triple of the day, and a walk. Lang scored three times, while Ferguson and Maguire each tallied two hits.
 
Gettysburg closes its trip to Myrtle Beach with two more games on Wednesday. The Bullets face Philadelphia University at 9 a.m. followed by St. Joseph's (N.Y.) College at 11 a.m.
