TROUTVILLE, Va. – The Gettysburg College softball team closed its spring trip with a 14-9 loss to Mount Aloysius College at the Roanoke Valley College Softball Bash on Saturday.
Gettysburg (6-6) opened with the game's first two runs as sophomore
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) and senior
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) reached base with a walk and single, respectively, before coming home on a double by freshman
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon).
Mount Aloysius (9-3) put three runs on the board in the third before striking for five in the fourth. The Mounties sent 10 batters to the plate, recording four walks, two hits, and a hit-by-pitch.
The Bullets bounced back with seven runs over the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-8 lead. Sophomore
Alexa Katz (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) brought across one run in the fourth with a single. Gettysburg sent 11 batters to the dish in the fifth with sophomore
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) providing a big blow with a grand slam. Hallfors posted two singles in the inning, while junior
Abby Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) added an RBI double.
Mount Aloysius put up three runs in each of the final two innings to secure the win. Lindsy Sammarco cleared the bases with a two-out double in the team's final at bat.
Hallfors finished 3-for-5 with two runs for Gettysburg. The senior moved into sixth on the program's all-time hit list with 157 and she is just three runs shy of becoming the seventh player to score 100 in a career.
Hall went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI and Zengel reached base three times with two hits and a hit-by-pitch. Senior
Katie Lang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) scored a pair of runs after reaching base with a single and two walks in the contest.
Gettysburg makes its home debut against Lebanon Valley College on Thursday, March 21, at 3:00 p.m.
