GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Every starter recorded a hit as the Gettysburg College softball team beat Muhlenberg College 10-2 in the nightcap of a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field. The Bullets had to settle for a split as the Mules pounded out 14 hits in an 8-3 victory in Saturday's opening game.
Gettysburg (7-7, 1-1 CC) trailed 2-1 in the second game, but the Bullets sent 11 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning to score seven runs. After an out to lead off the frame, the hosts posted three consecutive singles to load the bags. Sophomore
Alexa Katz (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) came through with a single to center to score two runs and give Gettysburg the lead.
Senior
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) plated another run before freshman
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdone) blasted a double to right-center to score two more. Junior
Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) tripled to right to bring home Zengel and then scored on a wild pitch to finish off the inning.
The Bullets put an early end to the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) brought home the first by beating out an infield single. Hallfors brought in the final run with a ground-out to first to score senior
Lindsey Peragallo (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) from third.
Gettysburg posted 14 runs in the game with Katz finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Hallfors, sophomore
Ashley Iannone (Great Meadows, N.J./Blair Academy), and senior
Katie Lang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) each tallied a pair of hits. Hallfors picked up three RBI and both Lang and Peragallo scored two runs.
Freshman
Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) picked up the victory to improve to 3-2 this spring. Fox surrendered two runs on six hits while striking out two.
Game one was a close affair until the Mules broke the game open with four runs in their final at bat. The visitors jumped on the board in the first inning as Chelsea Benjamin blasted a double to left-center and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Kline.
Gettysburg retaliated in the bottom of the frame as Tighe led off with a triple off the right-field fence. She came around to score on a fielder's choice by Hallfors, beating the second baseman's throw to the plate. Hallfors would score on a groundout by Maguire later in the inning.
Muhlenberg jumped back in front with a pair of runs in the third inning and held the advantage until the bottom of the fifth. With two outs on the board, Maguire knocked a double to right-center and came around to score the tying run on a single by senior
Sam Bader (York, Pa./Central York).
Kline put the Mules back in front to stay with an RBI single in the sixth. In the seventh, Brittany Dzieciolowski blasted a solo home run to right-center to add to the lead. Muhlenberg tacked on three more runs in the frame, including two on a single down the left-field line by Benjamin.
Tighe, Zengel, Maguire, and Bader each tallied two hits in the opening game.
Dzieciolowski went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Alyssa Schelle was 3-for-4 in the opener for Muhlenberg. Kelsey Jones improved to 6-0 on the year after allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out nine.
Gettysburg returns to the field on Sunday, March 24, with a non-conference doubleheader against Lebanon Valley College beginning at 1 p.m.
