SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna University held visiting Gettysburg College to just one run on nine hits as the Crusaders swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Bullets on Monday.
Susquehanna (28-6) improved to 16-2 over its last 18 contests with the victories. The Crusaders held Gettysburg (17-19) off the board until the sixth in a 9-1 win in the opening game. The Bullets finished with four hits in a 5-0 loss in the nightcap.
After three scoreless innings in game one, Gettysburg threatened in the top of the fourth with the first two batters reaching base. A fielder's choice eliminated the lead runner and a line drive to second resulted in a double play to close the threat.
Susquehanna came out with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Madison Clark brought home the first two runs of the game with a double to left field. Clark came around to score on a sacrifice fly with the fourth run scoring on an error.
Gettysburg picked up its lone run in the sixth inning with senior
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) slashing a single up the middle and coming around to score on a hit by sophomore
Ashley Iannone (Great Meadows, N.J./Blair Academy). The Crusaders added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the game.
Hallfors went 2-for-3, while freshman
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) reached base twice via a walk and a single.
In the nightcap, Susquehanna did all its damage in the second inning with 10 batters stepping up to the plate. The Crusaders picked up five runs on three hits, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and an error.
Gettysburg was unable to answer as the hosts prevented any base-runners from reaching third base in the game.
Hallfors added another hit in the nightcap, while freshman
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) went 2-for-3.
Gettysburg closes out the regular season at Haverford College on Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m.
