BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Sawyer Janes scored in the 84th minute to lift Bridgewater College to a 1-0 victory over Gettysburg College in a non-conference men's soccer match on Saturday.
Gettysburg (0-1) and Bridgewater (1-1) were deadlocked and inching closer to overtime when Janes fielded a lob pass from Adrian Zamora and lofted a shot over goalie Connor Darrell (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) for the match's only goal at 83:59.
The Bullets tested Eagle goalie Mark Davis early with seniors Tyler Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) and Devin Geiman (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) putting shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes. Davis smothered both attempts as part of his match-high six saves.
Davis stopped two more Gettysburg attempts by Shaffer and freshman Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) inside the final five minutes of the opening half, while Darrell stopped Zamora with 55 seconds left before the break.
Sophomore Ryan Kennedy (Frederick, Md./McDonogh School) posted Gettysburg's last shot on goal in the 73rd minute.
Gettysburg finished with an 11-10 advantage in shots and a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Shaffer led the Bullets with four attempts, including three on goal.
Gettysburg makes its home debut against Misericordia University on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
