GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Tara Crowley (Wall, N.J./Wall) booted in a rebound in the 55th minute and the defense held Ursinus to just four shots as the Gettysburg College women's soccer team topped the Bears 1-0 in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday night.
Gettysburg (5-0-1, 1-0 CC) remained unbeaten on the season with another strong defensive effort. Ursinus (4-3, 0-1 CC) was unable to get a clear shot on goal during the contest, with the visitors managing just one shot in the second half. The Bullets have not allowed an opponent to put up a double-figure shot total since the opening match of the season with Grove City College (10 shots).
With the defense holding the Bears at bay, the offense took its time getting into rhythm. The hosts pressed the advantage early in the second stanza with junior Molly Phillips (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) striking a shot from the right corner of the box in the 55th minute. Ursinus goalie Kara DiJoseph was unable to control the hard shot and Crowley swooped in on the left side to touch the ball into the right side of the net at 54:49. The goal was Crowley's first of the year, while Phillips picked up her second helper.
Gettysburg put two more shots on the goal, including one by junior Georgia Ferguson (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) in the 61st minute, but DiJoseph preserved the one-goal deficit with a pair of stops.
Gettysburg finished with a 15-4 shot advantage and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) picked up her 10th career shutout with the victory. Junior Brigid Behan (Newport, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) led the Bullets with five shot attempts.
Gettysburg visits York (Pa.) College for a non-conference match up on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m.
