HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata jumped out to a 28-9 halftime advantage, then held off Gettysburg in the second half as the undefeated Eagles downed the Bullets 38-16 in wet conditions Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference football action at Knox Stadium.
Ward Udinski passed for 237 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 76 yards and an additional TD for the Eagles (3-0, 2-0 CC), who broke a seven-game losing streak versus Gettysburg and defeated the Bullets for the first time since 1979. Zach McCaulley rushed for 103 yards on 16 carries for Juniata.
Senior Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) racked up 249 all-purpose yards, including 156 yards on six kickoff returns, for Gettysburg (1-2, 0-2 CC), which is still seeking its first Centennial Conference win.
Each team piled up over 300 yards of offense, with the Eagles outgaining the Bullets 477-325. However, Juniata forced four Gettysburg turnovers (three fumbles, one interception) and recorded five sacks.
Junior Zach Miller (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) threw for 101 yards and a touchdown on 13-of-23 passing for the Bullets while LeNoir caught five passes for 35 yards and a TD. Sophomore tailback Kyle Wigley (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) led the Gettysburg ground game with 47 yards on 11 carries.
For the second time this season, sophomore linebacker Kodie McNamara (Spring Lake, N.J./Manasquan) piled up 19 tackles for Gettysburg while freshman linebacker Michael Pennella (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior linebacker Cody DiAmore (Haddon Heights, N.J./Bishop Eustace) added 12 and 10 tackles, respectively.
The game was played in a steady rain that picked up as the day progressed.
The Bullets won the coin toss but deferred, and the Eagles responded with a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 17-yard pass from Udinski to DaVon Mitchell.
Gettysburg went three-and-out on their first two possessions but pulled to within 7-6 following an eight-play, 64-yard drive. LeNoir capped the march by hauling in a catch around the 10-yard line, spinning around several Eagles, and bulling over a defender on his way into the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown reception. But the extra point was blocked and the scoreboard read 7-6 with 2:37 to go in the opening quarter.
The Eagles responded with touchdowns on three of their next four drives. Udinski connected with Aaron O'Brien for a 27-yard scoring toss to make it 14-6 with 30 seconds left in the quarter before the Bullets pulled to within five on a 39-yard field goal by junior Matt Perkins (Whitehouse Station, N.Y./Hunterdon Central) with 9:36 left in the first half. Perkins' kick was the longest field goal by a Bullet since Mike Barrett '11 booted a 45-yarder at McDaniel College on Nov. 6, 2010.
Juniata scored on their two possessions, starting with a 3-yard touchdown run from Udinski that pushed its lead to 21-6 with 6:27 showing. The Eagles started with a short field after Slutter returned the kickoff 53 yards to the Gettysburg-32.
The Bullets were moving on their next drive, but Miller had his pass tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Kevin Gorman at the Juniata-38. Five plays later, Udinski hit Myers in the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown pass, making it 28-9 with 1:51 remaining in the half.
Gettysburg fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Eagles recovered at the Bullet-31. But Juniata was unable to capitalize, as a 42-yard field goal sailed wide left on the final play of the stanza.
The Bullets wasted little time cutting into the lead in the second half, moving 53 yards on six plays. Junior wing Fred Caruso (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) peeled off an 18-yard run to put Gettysburg at the Eagle-2, then took it in himself on the following play, taking a pitchout left and sailing over the pylon to make it 28-16 with 13:32 to go in the third quarter.
Gettysburg punted on its next possession before driving to the Juniata-15 late in the third quarter. But that's where the Eagles recovered a fumble, and they would then embark on a 19-play, 78-yard drive that ate up some 9:33 off the clock. Ken Kysor completed the drive for the Eagles with a 23-yard field goal with 10:38 left in the game, making it 31-16. Udinski kept the chains moving with a 2-yard quarterback sneak at midfield on a fourth-and-one.
The Bullets moved into Juniata territory once again on the ensuing drive, but the Eagles halted the march with back-to-back sacks as Gettysburg turned it over on downs at the Eagle-40. Juniata then salted the game away with a 60-yard drive that chewed up 4:59, ending in a 16-yard touchdown reception by Kyle Schuck with 2:15 remaining.
Gettysburg returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Susquehanna University at 1 p.m. on Homecoming.
