ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Senior Tyler Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) connected on a penalty kick in the 96th minute to lift the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a dramatic come-from-behind victory over host Muhlenberg College on Saturday.
Gettysburg (1-5, 1-0 CC) ended a nine-match winless streak against Muhlenberg (4-3, 0-1 CC) and won on the Mules' home turf for the first time since 2002. The Bullets needed every ounce of perseverance on a wet and dreary night, particularly after Muhlenberg scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.
After a flurry of shots by Muhlenberg, the Bullets went on the offensive in the final 10 minutes with junior Parker Delmolino (Monroe, Conn./Fairfield Prep) booting home the ball to tie the contest at 84:08.
The Mules nearly ended the match 50 seconds later with a shot on the cage, but a sliding kick save by a Bullet defender wiped away the would-be goal and set the stage for extra time.
In overtime, senior Connor Darrell (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) made his match-high eighth save in the 93rd minute to preserve the deadlock.
Midway through the overtime session, freshman Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) was taken down from behind inside the box and Gettysburg was awarded the penalty kick opportunity. Shaffer took up the challenge and blasted his first goal of the season to gain the victory.
Muhlenberg finished with a 23-6 lead in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. In addition to Darrell's eight saves, the Bullet defense stepped up with two team saves.
Gettysburg was 0-8-1 since a 2-1 win over Muhlenberg in 2005. The Mules had won each of the last six meetings since a 1-1 tie in the 2006 Centennial Conference Tournament.
Gettysburg hosts the University of Marymount on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.
