Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Junior
Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) hammered an attack off a potential block for match point as the Gettysburg College volleyball team clinched a dramatic five-set victory at McDaniel College on Wednesday night inside the Gill Center.
Gettysburg (18-8, 5-2 CC) needed every ounce of fortitude to dispatch McDaniel (18-9, 3-5 CC) and remain among the top four teams in the Centennial Conference heading into a marquee matchup with Muhlenberg College (22-4, 6-2 CC) this Saturday. The Bullets managed to get by the Green Terror with scores of 15-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-25, and 15-12.
McDaniel handled the Bullets in the opening set with its best attacking performance of the night. The Green Terror logged 13 kills on 32 attempts with just three errors (.312 attack percentage) in the first frame.
Gettysburg returned the favor with 15 kills in each of the next two sets. The Bullets led by as many as eight (19-11) in the second set before McDaniel stormed back to tie the contest at 21 and again at 22. Sophomore
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) stopped the surge with a kill and she would put an end to the set with another smack down shortly thereafter.
The Bullets maintained the lead throughout the third set although McDaniel would slice a six-point deficit to two (19-17). A kill by junior
Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and an ace by freshman
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) would boost the margin back to four which is where the set would finish out.
The Green Terror took the fourth set thanks in part to a number of Gettysburg errors, including seven on the attack.
In the decisive fifth set, the Bullets took control with a four-point run to make it 8-5 as the teams switched sides. McDaniel would get no closer than two points the rest of the way with Grevers sealing the victory with a kill on the right side.
Bergin turned in a monster performance for the Bullets, putting down a career-high 21 kills. Freshman
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) tied a personal best with 10 kills, while Grevers and Morrow finished with nine and seven kills, respectively. Grevers also had a hand in six of Gettysburg's 10 team blocks.
Freshman
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) posted 39 assists, two aces, and 16 digs, while junior
Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) produced a match-high 27 digs for the Bullets.
