Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Georgia Ferguson (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) and junior
Lauren Schapiro (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) scored one goal apiece to lift the Gettysburg College women's soccer team to its seventh win in a row, a 2-0 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over Muhlenberg College Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Clark Field.
Gettysburg (11-3-1, 7-0-1 CC) strengthened its grip on second place in the conference standings and is now on its longest winning streak since the 2004 team won eight in a row. With two Centennial matches remaining the Bullets trail Johns Hopkins University by just two points in the conference standings.
Muhlenberg (10-4-2, 6-3 CC), which entered the game in third place in the conference standings, saw its four-match winning streak come to an end.
Gettysburg's eight seniors were honored in a ceremony at halftime.
Ferguson supplied Gettysburg with all the scoring it would need in the 17th minute. Sophomore
Julia Ramsey (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) started the play with a corner kick from the left, and her pass was deflected by the goalie. But Ferguson was there to punch home the shot from the right post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Bullets took the first six shots of the period, but the Mules only shot of the half was a dangerous one. With just over two minutes left, Abby Lazofsky let loose from the right side in transition, but junior goalie
Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) made a diving stop and the Orange and Blue led 1-0 at the intermission.
Schapiro provided an insurance goal in the 54th minute. She took a cross from sophomore
Carly Cobbol (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and, from the center of the box, booted a shot inside the right post. The goal gave Cobbol her first career assist.
The remainder of the match was controlled by defense, as each team managed just two shots apiece the rest of the way.
Gray needed to make just one save to earn her eighth shutout of the season and the 24th of her career, as she moved into a tie with Beth O'Boyle '99 for third in school history.
Jen Mermelstein also stopped one shot for Muhlenberg.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits Franklin & Marshall College at 7 p.m. in a Centennial Conference tilt.
