Schapiro, Bullets Win Eighth Straight

LANCASTER, Pa. – Junior Lauren Schapiro (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) scored in the 34th minute to lift the Gettysburg College women's soccer team to its eighth-straight win, a 1-0 Centennial Conference (CC) victory at Franklin & Marshall College Tuesday evening.
 
Schapiro accepted a feed from freshman Maddie Heaney (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) and blasted in her fourth goal of the season as Gettysburg (12-3-1, 8-0-1 CC) clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming Centennial Conference tournament.
 
The Bullets, who reached the 12-win mark for the fifth year in a row, are now on their longest winning streak since the 2004 team also won eight straight.
 
Gettysburg outshot the Diplomats 12-6 and posted a posted a shutout for the seventh time in eight matches. Junior Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) made one saveb en route to her ninth shutout of the season and the 25th of her career, which moves her into sole possession of second in school history.
 
Shannon Johnson-Finn made five saves for F&M (1-14-1, 0-8-1 CC).
 
The Bullets controlled the game statistically in the first half, posting advantages in shots (8-3) and corner kicks (9-0). But Johnson-Finn made three saves for the Diplomats and it was a 1-0 game at the intermission.
 
Senior defender Mary Kamovitch (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) turned in a big play in the 60th minute to keep the Diplomats off the scoreboard. Following an F&M corner kick, Kamovitch cleared away a header that appeared to be heading inside the right post. Franklin & Marshall took its final shot in the 73rd minute but it was saved by Gray.
 
The Bullets play their regular-season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m., when they visit Centennial Conference leader and sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins University (9-0 CC) in a match that will decide the top seed and the right to host the upcoming conference tournament.
