Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – Fifth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College maintained its perfect record with a 1-0 decision over Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference men's soccer action at Tylus Field Wednesday night.
Franklin & Marshall (15-0-1, 8-0 CC) clinched the top seed for the upcoming conference championship with the victory over Gettysburg (9-6-1, 2-5-1 CC). The Diplomats controlled the pace in the first half, firing off seven shots before the Bullets could kick a ball in the direction of the goal.
Freshman
Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) kept the hosts off the board with a save on a shot by Derek Pawlush in the 22nd minute. Franklin & Marshall would score five minutes later as a cross by Jared Bomba was punched in by Janse Schermerhorn at 26:48.
The Diplomats looked to score off a corner kick later in the opening period, but Chris Scott's header attempt was knocked away by a Bullet defender in front of the cage.
Gettysburg would post its first shot just before the break with
Ryan Kennedy's (Frederick, Md./McDonogh School) attempt stopped by goalie Trevor Britton.
The Bullets logged four shots during a nine-minute span midway through the final period. Britton was up to the task, turning away attempts by freshmen
Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and
Lucas Weissman (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn). Britton stopped another shot by sophomore
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) in the 85th minute to preserve the shutout.
Franklin & Marshall held a 12-9 edge in shots and took all six corner kicks in the contest.
Karen finished with two saves for the Bullets. Smith, Weissman, and Santini each fired off a pair of shots.
Gettysburg closes the regular season at McDaniel College (7-8-1, 1-6-1 CC) on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3:30 p.m.
