Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Moravian College picked up three scores in the second quarter on the way to a 34-14 victory over host Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference football action Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Gettysburg (3-5, 3-4 CC) suffered its third consecutive loss, while Moravian (4-4, 3-4 CC) ended its own three-game skid and picked up its first victory in Gettysburg.
Junior
Kyle Wigley (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) led the offense with 86 yards on 16 carries. Senior
Zach Miller (Madison, Conn./Daniel hand) totaled 224 yards of offense and two touchdowns, while sophomore
Jordan Kelso (Cookstown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) reeled in three catches for 71 yards and a score. Senior
Gordon Prince (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) posted a career-high 15 tackles to lead the defense.
The Greyhounds racked up 240 yards on the ground, the most by a Gettysburg opponent this fall. Eli Redmond totaled 113 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, while Chris Negron carried the ball 24 times for 96 yards and another score. Quarterback Mike Hayes completed 20-of-30 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns.
The game started quietly with both teams punting the ball away on the first four possessions. The Bullets appeared to be in scoring position following a 28-yard pass from Miller to senior
Fred Caruso (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name), but an illegal formation penalty wiped the play away and set the stage for a punt with 5:39 left in the opening quarter.
Moravian put together its longest drive of the afternoon on its ensuing possession, covering 80 yards in 15 plays and finding the end zone on an eight-yard pass by Hayes to Negron at the beginning of the second quarter. The Greyhounds covered 82 yards on their next drive with Hayes tossing another touchdown to make it 14-0 with 4:41 left in the first half.
After a wind-effected short punt by Gettysburg set the ball on the host's 45, Moravian used up three plays to cover the distance to the end zone as Negron fielded a pass from Hayes and dashed 43 yards for the 21-0 lead.
Gettysburg was poised to score on its final drive of the opening half thanks to a 40-yard reception by Kelso, who leaped over a pair of defenders to grab the ball. The Bullets were stationed on the one yard line, but Miller's pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and Anthony Orlando picked off the ball in the end zone to end the threat.
Gettysburg found the end zone early in the third quarter with a 51-second drive. Wigley set the stage with a 23-yard rush and Kelso hauled in a 21-yard pass for the score to cut Moravian's advantage to 21-7 with 11:50 on the clock.
Later in the quarter, the Bullets recorded their first takeaway of the game as Negron fumbled deep in his own territory, but the hosts were unable to take advantage of the good field position and turned the ball over on downs.
Moravian answered with an 86-yard scoring drive to push the lead to 28-7 at the end of the third quarter.
Gettysburg turned the ball over on downs on its next possession after driving down to the four yard line of Moravian. After a three-and-out by the visitors, the Bullets cracked the scoring column on a nine-yard run by Miller to pull to 28-14 with 8:17 remaining.
The Greyhounds sealed the game with a 12-play drive lasting nearly six minutes. Seven consecutive rushes by Negron ended in a one-yard plunge to boost the lead to 34-14 with just over two minutes left.
Moravian out-gained Gettysburg 445-323 in total offense. The Greyhounds finished 10-of-18 on third-down conversions and converted on all four of their red zone opportunities.
Miller finished 20-of-37 for 181 yards. He recorded his 300th pass completion in the contest and also moved into third place in career passing yards at Gettysburg (3,874).
Caruso finished with 107 all-purpose yards for the Bullets. Senior
Mike Maguire (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) and junior
Kodie McNamara (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) each finished with 11 tackles with the latter adding one sack.
Orlando posted 13 tackles to pace Moravian. Andrew Richmond added seven tackles and a sack, while Jimmy McCarthy logged four tackles and four pass break-ups. Jalen Snyder-Scipio posted nine catches for 89 yards and Negron added 56 yards receiving.
The Bullets head to Dickinson College next weekend to battle the Red Devils for the Little Brown Bucket on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. It will be the 80th meeting between the two rivals with Gettysburg leading the series 42-35-2.
