Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Swarthmore College scored a goal in each half and the fifth-seeded Garnet defeated the top-seeded and 19th-ranked Gettysburg College women's soccer team in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
Â
With the victory, Swarthmore (13-6) moves on to the championship match, where it will face second-seeded Johns Hopkins University, a 2-1 winner over third-seeded Ursinus College in the other semifinals. The final is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
Gettysburg (13-4-1), which saw its nine-match winning streak come to an end, will now hope for a possible at-large berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. The field will be announced on Monday at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Â
The Garnet took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, when Mele Johnson rifled a shot from 20 yards out that bounced away from the goalie at the left post before trickling into center of the net.
Â
Swarthmore would outshoot the Bullets 7-2 in the opening half, though Gettysburg keeper
Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) made all five of her saves in the period, including another blast by Johnson from nearly the same spot in the 29th minute.
Â
Gettysburg controlled possession in the second half, racking up an 8-1 shot advantage. But the Garnet capitalized on their only shot of the half when, in the 81st minute, Melissa Trofa sent a long volley upfield into the right side of the box, where Emma Sindelar tracked it down. She slanted a shot past a diving keeper and inside the left post to make it a 2-0 game.
Â
Robin Magier made both of her saves in the stanza for Swarthmore and stopped a header by
Lauren Schapiro (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) in the 89th minute.
Â
Gettysburg outshot the Garnet 10-8 for the game and held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Â
Swarthmore will be seeking its first Centennial Conference title and has appeared in the final just once before, losing 1-0 to Johns Hopkins in 2006. The Blue Jays are aiming for their 12th Centennial crown.
