MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg College softball team had the bats swinging in a pair of victories on Thursday as the Bullets scored 21 runs and pounded out 25 hits in wins over Fitchburg State University and Baptist Bible College.
Gettysburg (6-1) defeated Fitchburg (3-4) 10-2 in five innings to start the day. Sophomore
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) knocked a triple to score the opening run and came around to score on a groundout by senior
Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) in the first frame.
Fitchburg State picked up a pair of unearned runs off sophomore
Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) in the top of the second, but that would be the end of the offense for the Falcons. Fox put a bases-loaded threat to rest in the third by initiating a double play and she closed the game by facing the minimum six batters over the final two innings.
The Bullets did most of their damage in the fourth inning. With the go-ahead run already crossing the plate, Zengel and Maguire hit back-to-back doubles to add three more runs to the board. Another run would score on an error to make it 7-2.
The game ended in the fifth with an RBI single by sophomore
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) leading to an error and two more runs for Gettysburg.
Zengel finished 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Hisgen and junior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) each finished with a pair of hits. Junior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) scored three runs on a hit and two walks.
Fox continued her impressive week by improving to 4-0 and lowering her ERA to 0.32. She allowed just two unearned runs on two hits and four walks against Fitchburg State.
Gettysburg's offense shared the spotlight with a strong pitching performance in an 11-0 victory over Baptist Bible (0-6). Junior
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) allowed only one hit – a screamer off her glove in the third inning – while walking just one and fanning five in the first four innings. Sophomore
Maddie Galdi (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) struck out two in a scoreless fifth inning.
The Bullets jumped all over the scoreboard in the first inning, turning in six runs on five hits. Maguire provided a big hit with an RBI triple and Hall capped the inning with a run-scoring single.
Gettysburg added three more in the second frame on another triple by Maguire and back-to-back singles by Hisgen and senior
Abby Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity).
The Bullets managed 13 hits as every starting position player recorded a base knock. Maguire was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Maguire's final RBI of the day was also the 100th of her career, making her just the fourth Bullet to reach the milestone.
Sophomore
Morgan Heinbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) and Hall each went 2-for-2, while Ferguson and freshman
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each tallied two hits. Hall also drove in two runs and Ferguson and Hisgen each scored two runs.
Gettysburg will close out its spring trip against Penn State Altoona and Emmanuel College on Friday, March 14, at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
