Fifth-ranked Bullets Dash Past Haverford

Gettysburg wins conference opener 17-6

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team turned on the jets in the second period and flew past visiting Haverford College 17-6 in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
 
Gettysburg (5-1, 1-0 CC) out-scored Haverford (4-3, 0-1 CC) 10-2 in the final period to pick up the victory. Sophomore Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) paced the Bullets with four goals in the game, while senior Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) and junior Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) each found the back of the net three times.
 
Christina Gould led the Fords with three goals.
 
With the score knotted at 1-1, Gettysburg pushed ahead with a five-goal run as Connolly and Kenny each turned in two tallies. The Fords fired back with the next three goals capped by a score by Gould to pull to 6-4 with 2:24 to play in the half.
 
Kenny upped the lead to three with 1.7 seconds left in the opening period.
 
Markiewicz set the tone at the beginning of the final stanza with two unassisted tallies 27 seconds apart. After a goal by Gould made it 9-5, the Bullets again went to work, racing past the Ford defenders for three more unassisted goals to make it 12-5 with 21:46 to play.
 
Gettysburg capped the game with a five-goal run started by back-to-back tallies by Connolly.
 
Gettysburg dominated inside the draw circle, winning 18-of-24 draw controls in the game. The Bullets also wreaked havoc on Haverford's transition, holding the Fords to 15-of-22 on clears.
 
Markiewicz added an assist, six draw controls, and a pair of caused turnovers. Kenny contributed two ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers, while Connolly managed four draw controls. Junior Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded one goal and two assists.
 
Freshman goalie Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) made six saves for the Bullets.
 
Gettysburg will host No. 10 York (Pa.) College on Wednesday, March 26, at 4 p.m.
