YORK, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team put up 20 runs in a non-conference sweep of York (Pa.) College Monday afternoon.
Gettysburg (10-3) cruised in the opening game at York (8-8), scoring seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 9-1 victory. The Bullets had to battle back from a five-run deficit and brought across the final two runs in the top of the seventh to pull out an 11-9 decision in the nightcap.
The visitors set an early tone in the opener as each of the first four hitters reached base. After a walk and single by junior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) and freshman
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton), respectively, junior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) brought around the game's first run with a single up the middle. Zengel then swiped second base and Abell scored on an error during the play. Senior
Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) accounted for the final run with a double to right-center to plate Zengel.
A similar scenario took shape in the top of the second as the first four hitters once again reached base safely for the Bullets. Tighe and Abell each provided run-scoring hits, while Zengel picked up a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-0.
That was plenty of room for junior
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) on the mound. She stranded seven runners in the game, including getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third. She allowed one run on seven hits and walked three.
Sophomore
Morgan Heinbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) finished 3-for-3 with a run in the opener. Abell went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Zengel finished 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI.
York went on the offensive early in game two with five runs in the first two frames. Gettysburg answered in the top half of the third with three runs, including an RBI single to left by junior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School).
The Bullets jumped in front with five runs in the fourth frame. Gettysburg quickly loaded the bases with Maguire drawing a bases-loaded walk. Three Spartan errors contributed to the remaining runs with Hall adding another RBI single.
After a run-scoring single by Maguire in the sixth made it 9-5, York cashed in with two big extra-base hits in the home half of the inning. Payton Hill brought in the first two runs with a double to left-center and Jena Ruby followed her with a two-run blast over the left-field fence to tie the game.
Maguire provided the game-winning run by driving in Zengel with two outs in the seventh. Sophomore
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) followed up with a double to bring home Maguire.
York threatened in its final at bat, putting two runners in scoring position with one out on the board. A fly into the right-field territory was caught by Zengel and she gunned down the runner trying to score from third to end the game.
Treanor picked up the victory in the nightcap to improve to 5-2 on the year. She allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over the final 5.2 innings. Zengel finished 2-for-4 with three runs and Maguire was 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBI, and two walks. Hisgen added a pair of hits and three RBI and Hall added three hits and two RBI.
