Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team scored only one run in a pair of losses to Franklin & Marshall College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
Gettysburg (14-13, 3-9 CC) fell behind early in a 9-1 loss in the opening game at Franklin & Marshall (22-10, 8-4 CC). The Bullets were shut out in the nightcap, tallying just four hits in a 1-0 loss.
Franklin & Marshall put up three runs in the opener's first inning, capped with a two-run homer by Kaitlin Zampino. The Diplomats put runners in scoring position in every frame, netting one run in the third and five more in the fourth to put the game away.
Justine Lohrey allowed only three Bullets to reach scoring position and only one to cross home plate in the visitor's final at bat. Sophomore
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./Hunterdon Central) brought across Gettysburg's run with a single to center field in the fifth inning.
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel between Zampino and Gettysburg's
Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy). After the first two hitters reached base, Zampino retired the next three to keep the visitors off the board. She allowed just four hits in the contest and closed the game by retiring the final nine batters she faced.
The Diplomats only managed one run off Fox in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs on the board and runners at first and third, Megan Ryan slapped a single to plate Zampino. After escaping a scoring threat in the third inning, Fox duplicated Zampino's effort by retiring the final nine hitters to step to the plate.
Fox allowed five hits over six innings, while Zampino allowed just four hits and struck out four.
Junior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) posted base hits in both ends of the doubleheader for the Bullets.
