Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) totaled 25 kills to lead the Gettysburg College volleyball team to a split on the opening day of the Battlefield Classic inside Bream Gym on Friday.
Gettysburg (1-1) cruised past Bridgewater State University 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-16) to open the new campaign. The Bullets continued their winning ways in the opening set against Carnegie Mellon University (2-0) before falling to the Tartans in four sets (26-28, 26-24, 25-10, 25-21).
Gettysburg had no issues with Bridgewater State, posting a .289 hitting percentage, totaling seven blocks, and serving 11 aces. Bergin tallied 11 kills, nine digs, and two aces to pace the team.
Junior
Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) posted seven kills and four blocks, while freshman
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) contributed five kills. Freshman setter
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) dished out 25 assists and junior
Alesha Miller (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) and freshman
Meri Lowy (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) each served up three aces.
The Bullets faced match point three times in the opening set against Carnegie Mellon. With the Tartans leading 26-25, Bergin put down a big kill to tie the set. Junior
Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) followed with an ace and a hitting error by the visitors gave Gettysburg the set.
The hosts carried the momentum into the second set and led 18-9 following a kill by Weikert. Carnegie Mellon steadily chipped away and ran off a six-point streak to surge ahead 24-23. Bergin stopped the run with a kill, but a service error by Gettysburg and a kill by Carnegie Mellon sealed the decision.
The Tartans jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the third frame and never looked back. Gettysburg battled back in the fourth set and held a 14-11 advantage. With the score tied 21-21, Carnegie Mellon closed with four-straight kills to complete the victory.
Bergin recorded 14 kills and 10 digs, while Weikert logged seven kills. Blair notched her first collegiate double-double with 29 assists and 15 digs, while Bentz produced five aces and 20 digs.
Casey Salandra led the Tartans with 13 kills, while Emily Newtown posted six kills, 34 assists, and 11 digs. Molly Higgins led the defensive effort with 25 digs.
Action continues on day two of the Battlefield Classic Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The Bullets square off with Penn State Altoona before closing the tournament against Oberlin College at 2 p.m.
