Comeback Falls Short at Elizabethtown

Blue Jays trip Bullets in four sets

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.  – Down 2-0, the Gettysburg College volleyball team battled back to win the third set against Elizabethtown College, but the Blue Jays withstood the Bullets' rally to win the fourth frame and earn a 3-1 non-conference victory Wednesday night.
 
Elizabethtown (5-4) ran through Gettysburg (6-4) in the opening two sets 25-13 and 25-11. The Blue Jays continued the march in the third frame, jumping out to a 15-9 lead after picking up seven consecutive points.
 
The Bullets recovered and eventually tied the game at 19-19 with a four-point run sparked by a pair of kills by freshman Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). The two teams traded blows until the visitors picked up the final two tallies on an attack error by Elizabethtown and an ace by junior Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) to seal a 26-24 decision.
 
The momentum carried over to the fourth set as Gettysburg jumped out to an 8-3 lead. The Bullets maintained the edge until late in the set when Elizabethtown went on a four-point run to take a 19-18 lead. The visitors would regain the upper-hand momentarily and push ahead 21-20, but the Blue Jays rattled off the final five points to win the set 25-21 and clinch the match.
 
Sophomore Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) paced Gettysburg with 13 kills and she added a dozen digs. Junior Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) turned in six kills, while Weikert chipped in with five kills.
 
Freshman Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) dished out 30 assists and put up a dozen digs. Bentz finished with two aces and a dozen digs and freshman Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) chipped in with two aces and 10 digs.
 
Kelci Scannapieco led a trio of Blue Jays with double-figure kills with 19. Steph High totaled 49 assists and Shannon Deck put up 23 digs.
 
Gettysburg will get a rematch with Elizabethtown on Friday as part of a tri-match on the Blue Jays' home court. The Bullets will face Rowan University at 6 p.m. before squaring off with the hosts at 8 p.m.
