GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College will open its Centennial Conference schedule on the road as the Bullets visit Ursinus College this Saturday, Sept. 13, on Patterson Field at 1 p.m.
Gettysburg (0-1) is coming off a tough 33-32 loss to Bridgewater College in its season opener. The Bullets took a 32-26 lead with three minutes to go only to see the Eagles storm back with the eventual game-winning touchdown with just over one minute remaining.
It was a strong showing by the Orange and Blue against a traditionally strong program and it gives the team a lot to build upon according to Head Coach
Barry Streeter.
"I thought there were a lot of positives," said Streeter, who ranks second in conference history with 108 wins against conference foes. "One was our players' resilience and trust in themselves and what we're doing. We're down 10-0 pretty early in the game and we came back to take a 19-16 lead going into halftime. Those kids didn't waiver the whole game as far as what they wanted to get done. That's a great sign."
Gettysburg begins its conference slate against Ursinus, which handled The College of New Jersey 47-7 in its opener last Friday. The Bears held the Lions to just 177 yards of total offense and returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Gettysburg and Ursinus have met 57 times since their first meeting in 1903. The Bullets hold a 33-20-4 edge in the series. The Bears won last year's meeting 41-23 thanks in large part to 185 yards and three touchdowns by running back Jason Golderer.
"They have a good football team," said Streeter. "They've got seven starters back on defense. They run really well. They're pretty balanced in what they do. I think we'll grow a whole lot from Saturday's game and I think we'll be ready to play a great game. I'm sure Ursinus will be too."
OPENING KICKOFFGettysburg and Ursinus meet for the 58th time in a series that dates back 111 years.

THE COACHESBarry Streeter enters his 36th season at the helm of Gettysburg's football program. Streeter is the longest-tenured active coach in Division III and his 178 wins rank him eighth among active coaches. Streeter has led Gettysburg to three Centennial Conference championships (1983-85) and he has twice been named CC Coach of the Year. In 1985, he led the Bullets to the only undefeated season in school history (9-0-1) and an appearance in the national semifinals.
Peter Gallagher is in his 13th season as the head coach at Ursinus. Gallagher is the Bears' all-time wins leader with a career record of 68-65. Ursinus has posted winning records in each of the last five seasons. In 2010, Ursinus grabbed a share of the Centennial Conference title and finished 8-2 overall.

The Bears never trailed in the contest and scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to break the game opener. After ending the first quarter with each team hitting a field goal, Ursinus capitalized on a pair of Gettysburg turnovers with 10 points to take a 13-3 lead. The Bullets remained within striking distance and sliced the 10-point deficit to 20-17 following a 62-yard pass from
Zach Miller (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) to
Aden Twer '14 late in the third quarter. The Bears put together three quick scoring drives in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Kyle Wigley (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), produced 128 yards and one touchdown. Miller finished with 231 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns to Twer. Twer totaled 86 yards on three grabs and became Gettysburg's all-time leader in touchdown receptions.
LAST TIME OUTGettysburg dropped its season opener to Bridgewater 33-32 last Saturday. The Bullets erased 10-point deficits twice in the first half with a 10-yard touchdown run by
Zach Miller giving the hosts a 19-16 edge at the break. After Bridgewater opened with the first score of the third quarter, junior
Dan Ciemniecki (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) stepped in front of a pass and ran it back 49 yards for a touchdown to give the Bullets a 26-23 lead. The Eagles tied the game with a field goal, but Gettysburg came right back with a scoring drive capped by a
Kyle Wigley two-yard run to surge ahead 32-26 with 3:05 left. Bridgewater was able to convert on fourth down in its own territory to continue its own scoring drive on the ensuing possession, which ended with a touchdown to make it 33-32 with 1:20 left. The Bullets managed to get into Bridgewater territory in the final seconds, but a last-second hail mary was swatted away at the goal line. Miller finished with 203 yards passing, 42 yards rushing, and three total touchdowns. Wigley ran for 55 yards on 10 carries, while junior
Kodie McNamara (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) posted 10 tackles and an interception.
CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE OPENERGettysburg is 16-15 all-time in Centennial Conference openers. Since 2003, the Bullets have logged a record of 5-6 in the conference opener. From 1983 to 2006, Gettysburg and McDaniel kicked off the conference campaign, with the Bullets holding a slight edge 13-12. The Bullets posted a 1-3 record against Johns Hopkins from 2007 to 2010, while winning two of the last three openers against Ursinus.
GETTYSBURG OFFENSEIt was business as usual for the Gettysburg offense in the opener against Bridgewater. After a few stalled drives to open the game, the Bullets revved up the engine at the end of the first quarter and concluded the game with 407 yards of total offense. The yardage was evenly split between rushing and passing with eight players carrying the ball for a total of 204 yards and senior quarterback
Zach Miller throwing for 203. Junior tailback
Kyle Wigley led the ground game with 55 yards on 10 carries, while Miller totaled 42 yards and two touchdowns on 22 attempts. Nine different players grabbed a pass with senior
Fred Caruso (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) hauling in four for 45 yards.
GETTYSBURG DEFENSEGettysburg held its own for much of the game against Bridgewater's strong attack. The Bullets held all-conference running back
Jacob Wright in check for most of the afternoon and allowed only 135 yards on the ground. The Eagles used a pair of quarterbacks to rack up 318 yards in the air. Linebackers
Kodie McNamara and
Joseph Vegso (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple-Newtown) and bandit
Gordon Prince (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) each posted 10 tackles. McNamara and
Dan Ciemniecki each picked off a pass, while junior
Brian Calatozzo (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) logged four tackles and two pass break-ups.
GETTYSBURG SPECIAL TEAMSGettysburg missed three extra points against Bridgewater. After a bad snap on the first extra-point attempt, the Bullets missed two more extra-point kicks as junior
Robby Fay's (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) attempt going into halftime hit the upright and his final kick after Gettysburg's last touchdown was blocked. Seniors
Fred Caruso and
Nick Ulassin (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) handled most of the kick return duties with Ulassin averaging 16 yards on four returns and Caruso posting 44 yards on two returns. Caruso also posted 19 yards on his only punt return.
MILESTONE WATCHJunior tailback
Kyle Wigley is just 90 yards shy of reaching 1,000 rushing yards in his career. In 18 games, Wigley has carried the ball 157 times for 910 yards and an average of 5.8 yards per carry. He would be the 27th Bullet to reach 1,000 career rushing yards. With 45 yards receiving against Bridgewater, senior
Fred Caruso became the 11th Bullet with 1,000 career receiving yards. His 1,029 yards put him 10th in school history. Senior
Nick Ulassin is 96 yards away from each 1,000 on kickoff returns. Only six Bullets have turned in 1,000 yards on kickoff returns.
PASSING TD STREAKSenior quarterback
Zach Miller has thrown for a touchdown in 11 consecutive games. During that stretch, he has thrown for 17 touchdowns against just six interceptions. Miller has thrown for at least 200 yards in each of his last five outings.
