Men’s Soccer Downs Ursinus in CC Opener

Smith Scores Two Goals

Henry Smith posted his first collegiate multi-goal game.
Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored two goals while classmate KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) notched one goal and one assist as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team rolled to a 4-1 victory at Ursinus College in its Centennial Conference opener Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bullets (6-1, 1-0 CC) continued their best start since 2006 while posting their third-consecutive victory.

Ursinus (2-4-1, 0-1 CC) opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Matt Cioeta struck off a deflection. But Gettysburg answered quickly, scoring two minutes later when DePontes converted off a throw-in for his fourth goal of the season.

The Bullets padded their lead with two more goals in the first half. Smith headed in a free kick off the foot of senior Kyle Franks (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) in the 25th minute for his fourth goal of the year before freshman Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) sent home a cross from senior Parker Delmolino (Monroe, Conn./Fairfield Prep) in the 33rd minute to make it a 3-1 game at the half.

It remained a two-goal game for nearly the rest of the way until Smith provided an insurance tally in the 86th minute, drilling a shot from the top of the box off a DePontes feed to set the final score.

Sophomore Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) did not have to make a save to earn the victory in goal while Brian Gately stopped five shots for the Bears. Gettysburg outshot Ursinus 13-3.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Marymount University at 7 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
