GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The only thing standing between the Gettysburg College football team and both a 5-0 record and the Centennial Conference-wide bye week is a match up with McDaniel College this Saturday at Gill Stadium at 1 p.m.
Gettysburg (4-0, 3-0 CC) seeks a perfect record at the midpoint of the season for the second time in the last four campaigns. In 2012, the Bullets started 5-0 before finishing the season with a 7-3 record.
"The point I want to make to the players is you're not 4-0 when you're playing the next game," said Head Coach
Barry Streeter. "It's 0-0. It doesn't matter who you're playing. You have to bring your 'A' game and you have to play up to your own standards. We have not played up to our standards yet."
Despite the unbeaten record, the road has not always been smooth for Gettysburg. The team trailed in each of its three conference affairs, falling behind 8-0 to Ursinus College, 25-24 to Juniata College, and 24-7 to Susquehanna University. The Bullets claimed victories in all three contests, including in the final seconds at Juniata.
"I think it's a great feeling, but I think there's still a lot of work to be done," said senior kicker
Robby Fay (New Providence, N.J./New Providence). "I think we really want to do something special, especially the guys that have been here all four years. We think we have the potential to beat anyone in the conference and we want to go out and prove it."
Despite falling behind early to Susquehanna, Gettysburg kept its focus and pushed past the Crusaders. The Bullets scored three touchdowns in the final 3:11 of the first half to take the lead, and after the Crusaders went ahead 30-24 at the start of the third quarter, the Orange and Blue ran off the final 21 points to claim a 49-30 win.
Gettysburg heads into this weekend's match up with McDaniel averaging 37.5 points per game. The Bullets lead the conference with an average of 281.3 rushing yards per game, while sitting second in the league with only 125.3 rushing yards allowed per game.
Matt McFadden '19 is averaging 17 yards per punt return this fall. While the offense and defense have shined, special teams play has been a major factor in the success of the team. Fay is averaging a league-best 41.3 yards per punt and has placed nine of his 15 kicks inside the opponent's 20-yard line. On the other side, freshman
Matt McFadden (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) leads the entire nation with 533 combined (kickoff/punt) kick return yards.
With those two players stepping up combined with the steady play out of their teammates in coverage, Gettysburg has been dominant, particularly in the second half. Opponents have managed to start a drive in Bullet territory just once this season in the second half of play, with an average starting spot at the 25-yard line. Meanwhile, Gettysburg's average starting position is a full 10 yards better in the second half. The Bullets have out-scored their opponents 83-26 in the final two quarters.
"I think we started off a little slow, but we've worked hard on making improvements where we needed to," said Fay. "That really showed last game. I think we were very good in all aspects of it, from kickoff to return to field goals and extra points to punting."
On paper, Saturday's foe doesn't seem to pose much of a threat. McDaniel (0-4, 0-3 CC) has yet to crack the win column and the Green Terror have been out-scored by over 100 points in its three Centennial affairs. But both Streeter and Fay know those numbers don't mean anything when the game starts.
"I caution the team every Monday about being a fan versus being a player," said Streeter, who ranks seventh in Division III with 187 career wins. "I don't want to hear about the games in the future or in the past. We need to play to a certain standard and we can't afford to look at records. Once you go into a game with a mental relaxation, that's when you're going to get beat."
"We can't underestimate any team in our conference regardless of record and stats," said Fay. "I think if we go out and play our football the way we know how and the way we've been playing we should come away with a 'W,' but that's up to us."
OPENING KICKOFFGettysburg and McDaniel meet for the 69th time on the gridiron. The Bullets lead the series 49-18-1 and have won each of the last four meetings.
