Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored her first career hat trick as the Gettysburg College field hockey team topped visiting Swarthmore College 6-0 in a Centennial Conference contest at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Gettysburg (4-7, 1-4 CC) went into attack mode from the opening whistle with five shots in the first 3:32. Four of those attempts were saved by Swarthmore (1-10, 0-6 CC) goalie Ainsley Parrish.

The Bullets broke through just before the nine-minute mark as junior Tori Sankey (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) slapped in her fourth goal of the season following a pass by classmate Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien).

Gettysburg out-shot Swarthmore 14-4 in the opening half. The Bullets added a second tally in the 30th minute when senior Mari Bigley (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) stole the outlet pass, dribbled just inside the circle, and slammed a liner into the cage for her second goal of the year.

The Garnet posted a pair of shots in the final seconds of the opening period. Sophomore goalie Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) came diving out to knock the first attempt away, while senior Emily Van Horn (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) stopped the attempted rebound shot with her sixth defensive save of the year as time expired.

Fitzgerald took over the game in the second half. She scored her first goal 2:05 into the period, flipping a reverse shot over the keeper. The Bullets went ahead 4-0 when Wright slid a pass past the Swarthmore goalie to a wide open Kathryn Hardman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg).

Fitzgerald accounted for each of the final two goals by the hosts. She cleaned up a rebound in the 61st minute and capped her day with an unassisted tally in the 65th minute.

Swarthmore posted seven penalty corners in the final four minutes but came up empty against Gettysburg's defense.

Gettysburg held a 27-10 advantage in shots, while the Garnet finished with a 10-9 edge in penalty corners.

Fitzgerald's hat trick was the second this season by a Bullet. Wright tallied three goals in Gettysburg's opening contest against York (Pa.) College on Sept. 2.

Mowery finished with a pair of saves. Parrish tallied 10 stops for Swarthmore.

Gettysburg travels to Cabrini College for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
