Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Junior Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory at Susquehanna University in a non-conference match Tuesday evening.

Gettysburg (8-3-1) trailed 1-0 before junior KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) forced the extra session when he struck in the 84th minute for his fourth goal of the season. DePontes also assisted on Smith's game-winner.

Making his first appearance of the season, sophomore goalie Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) made a career-high six saves for the Bullets, including two in the final three minutes of regulation after DePontes pulled Gettysburg even.

It was the second golden goal of the season for the Orange and Blue, who also worked overtime to beat Ursinus College 2-1 on Sept. 19.

Susquehanna (6-5-2) outshot the Bullets 19-13 and 10-3 in the first half. But Karen made a pair of saves in the opening period and the scoreboard read 0-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Just over five minutes into the second half the Crusaders scored on the first shot of the stanza when Samuel Tana converted off an assist from Nick Fecci. Although the Bullets outshot Susquehanna 9-8 in the half, the Crusaders prevented Gettysburg from taking a shot on goal until DePontes found the back of the net with 6:16 showing.

Susquehanna ended the half with three shots. But Karen saved a header off a corner kick in the 87th minute before collecting another stop in the closing seconds of regulation to send the Bullets to their fourth overtime affair of the season.

Smith entered the match as the Division III co-leader in assists per game (1.0). But he displayed his scoring capabilities midway through the 10-minute period, when he accepted a feed from DePontes and delivered his fifth goal of the year.

Augusto Lima made two saves for Susquehanna.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when it visits Dickinson College at 6 p.m.
