Kingsley Nzekwe (Greensboro, N.C./New Garden Friends School) and junior
Jordy Steelman (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) scored one goal apiece and the Gettysburg College men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over McDaniel College in its season finale on Saturday at Clark Field.
With the win, the Bullets (10-5-2, 4-5 CC) post their highest victory total since going 12-7-1 in 2007.
Gettysburg's five seniors were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the match before all of them started together for the first time this season.
Junior
Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) needed to make just one save to earn his seventh shutout of the season while Nick Over collected sevens stops for McDaniel (3-10-4, 0-7-2 CC).
The Bullets controlled the match from the start and outshot the Green Terror 17-2. However, they were unable to solve Over until the 42nd minute, when Nzekwe headed home his first collegiate goal, placing a cross from sophomore
Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) into the upper left corner of the net. Gettysburg carried its 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Orange and Blue outshot McDaniel 8-1 in the opening half.
It was still a 1-0 game in the 81st minute, when Steelman found himself on a breakaway with junior
KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel). Steelaman received DePontes' well-placed pass before heading in his first career goal.
Over made four of his stops in the second half, when Gettysburg outshot McDaniel 9-1.
