Steph Zengel blasted her 10th career home run Sunday at Swarthmore.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  – Junior Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) drove in five runs and senior Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) posted five steals as Gettysburg completed a sweep of Swarthmore in Centennial Conference softball action Sunday.

Gettysburg (13-3, 2-0 CC) took the opener 7-4 on the strength of a three-run home run by Zengel in the sixth inning. Tighe, who recently became the program's career leader in steals, swiped a school-record four bases in the first game. In the nightcap, the Bullets jumped out in front with six runs in the second inning on the way to a 10-3 win over Swarthmore (4-6, 0-2 CC).

Zengel went 4-for-8 with two runs and five RBI in the sweep. Tighe logged three hits and scored four runs, while senior Ashley Iannone (Great Meadows, N.J./Blair Academy) also posted three hits and drove in two runs.

Tighe set an early tone for the opener by singling through the left side and stealing a pair of bases in the first inning. She eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.

Despite putting runners on base in every frame, neither team managed to score again until the fifth. The Bullets picked up an unearned run in the top of the frame, but the Garnet answered with two runs in the home half. The hosts had the bases loaded with no outs, but senior Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) escaped the jam with a strikeout and back-to-back fielder's choices.

With one out in the sixth, Tighe and sophomore Jamie Abell (Glenn Ridge, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each drew walks and quickly pulled off a double-steal. The steals didn't matter, however, as Zengel smacked her first home run of the season over left field to give Gettysburg a 5-2 edge.

After the Garnet got one run back in the bottom of the frame, Tighe padded the Gettysburg lead with a two-run single. She stole second base during the ensuing at bat to break the single-game record of three set on nine occasions, including twice previously by Bullet speedster.

Swarthmore loaded the bases again in its final at bat, but managed just one run.

Treanor improved to 6-2 with the victory. She allowed seven hits and a career-high 10 walks, but the defense backed her up by stranding 14 Garnet runners. Three of the four runs were earned and Treanor fanned five batters.

Tighe finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI to go with the steals. Zengel recorded two runs and a walk to complement the homer, while Iannone tallied two hits.

The visitors took advantage of two errors to plate six runs in the second, five of which came through as unearned. Junior Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) led off with a double, the first of two hits in the frame. Abell provided the big blow with a bases-clearing double and later scored on a single by Hisgen.

In the third inning, freshman Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) connected on her first career home run, but the first-year missed home plate and was called out. She was credited with a triple and one RBI.

Gettysburg added three runs in the sixth frame. Tighe beat out a bunt single and promptly stole second base for her 18th steal of the campaign. She is now just three stolen bases shy of the program's single-season record.

After a single by Abell, Zengel plated both runners with a hit up the middle. A sacrifice fly by Iannone would account for the game's final run.

Swarthmore picked up three runs to open the sixth before freshman Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) reentered the game and shut the door. Reilly improved to 6-1 after finishing off all seven innings and allowing just five hits while striking out six.

Abell finished 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI, while Zengel posted three hits and two RBI. Hisgen finished with a pair of hits, one run, and one RBI.

Gettysburg will travel to Dickinson College on Tuesday, March 31, for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
