Box Score 2 HAVERFORD, Pa. – Freshman
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scattered six hits over seven innings to earn her sixth shutout of the season and help Gettysburg College pick up a split in its Centennial Conference regular-season finale at Haverford College on Saturday.
Gettysburg (26-12, 11-5 CC) and Haverford (24-8-1, 12-4 CC) will see one another in just six days on the opening day of the Centennial Conference Championship hosted by McDaniel College. The Fords locked up the No. 2 seed, while the Bullets earned the third seed. McDaniel College (26-10, 14-2 CC) earned hosting rights as the top team during the regular season, while Muhlenberg College (16-14, 10-6 CC) secured the fourth and final playoff spot on Saturday.
Haverford jumped out with four runs in the first inning on the way to a 7-1 win in the opening game. Reilly was solid with just six hits allowed and no walks in a 3-0 victory in game two. The victory also marked the 250th career win for Gettysburg Head Coach
Annette Hunt-Shepherd.
The Fords, who finished the regular season second to Gettysburg in team batting average, threatened with runners in scoring positions in four different innings of the nightcap, but Reilly put the threats down quietly with fly outs to cap the first and third and grounders in the fourth and fifth. She retired each of the final seven batters she faced and improved to 14-2 this season.
The Bullets put runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings but couldn't convert. The trend changed in the sixth when freshman
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) and senior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) stroked back-to-back singles. After the second out of the inning, senior
Melissa Tighe (Little falls, N.J./Mount St. Dominic Academy) smashed a double to left-center to plate Leonardo. Sophomore
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) beat out an infield single in the next at bat to bring home Hall and make it 2-0.
Leonardo added a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh to set the final score.
Haverford busted out for four runs on six hits in the opening inning of the first game. Each of the first three Ford batter posted singles and following back-to-back outs, three more base knocks contributed to the remaining runs to make it 4-0. Haverford took a 5-0 lead in the second on a lead-off homer by Jessica Koshinski.
Gettysburg managed just six hits against Sara Tauriello, who improved to 11-1 with the win. Tauriello allowed multiple hits in only the fifth inning when a double by freshman
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and a single by Abell accounted for the visitor's lone run.
Kristin Tatum capped the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth to make it 7-1.
Freshman
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) paced Gettysburg with a pair of hits in game two.
The CC Championship begins Friday, May 1, at McDaniel and continues through Saturday and Sunday. Official times for all the contests will be announced on Monday, April 27.
Gettysburg closes out the regular season with a non-conference twinbill against Elizabethtown College on Tuesday, April 28, at 3 p.m.
