Box Score EWING, N.J. – Senior
Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) broke the school record for career shutouts as the Gettysburg College women's soccer team battled No. 9-ranked College of New Jersey to a scoreless draw in its season opener Tuesday evening.
Â
Gray finished with six saves for her 27th career shutout, surpassing Kathy Kroupa '95 for the all-time mark. Kroupa will be inducted into the Gettysburg Hall of Athletic Honor next month.
Â
The Bullets have now defeated or tied a top-10 opponent twice in their last three matches dating back to last season. In its regular-season finale last year, Gettysburg defeated then-No. 6 Johns Hopkins University 2-1.
College of New Jersey had won the previous 11 meetings between the two schools since Gettysburg's 1-0 win in 1994 when TCNJ was ranked No. 1.
Â
The Lions, who were also playing in their season opener, outshot Gettysburg 13-4. But the Bullet defense stood tall, thanks in part to a pair of spectacular saves from Gray. Three minutes into the second half, she made a diving stop to her left to knock away a sure goal. Then in the 56th minute, she reached back to stop a header off a corner kick. TCNJ outshot Gettysburg 7-0 in the half, but that's when Gray made four of her saves.
Â
The hosts would also take the only four shots over the two overtime periods, but Gray made a save in each stanza.
Â
The Bullets outshot the Lions 4-2 in the first half, with junior
Hannah Theurer (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) and sophomore
Shannon Brady (Glen Head, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) taking two apiece.
Â
Jessica Weeder made one save to earn shutout for TCNJ.
Â
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Hiram College at 7 p.m. in the Gettysburg Cup in the Bullets' home opener.
