Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) recorded a career-high 19 saves for the Gettysburg College field hockey team in a 5-0 loss to ninth-ranked Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.
Ursinus (4-1, 1-0 CC), which has claimed 10 of the last 11 conference titles, went right on the offensive with eight shots in the first 5:55. Mowery swiped away three of the attempts before the Bears finally found the back of the cage on a shot by Amber Steigerwelt at 6:06.
Despite firing off 27 shots in the opening period, Ursinus came up empty for the rest of the half as Mowery posted 13 saves. Senior
Emily Van Horn (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) provided some added protection with her team-best fourth defensive save of the season in the 20th minute.

Kathryn Hardman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) just missed putting Gettysburg (3-2, 0-1 CC) on the board in the 17th minute, but her shot on goal was knocked away by defender Jordan Miller. Ursinus goalie Danielle DeSpirito stopped a penalty stroke by junior

The Bears tallied four goals in the final period, including three by Megan Keenan. After Ann Kopera scored in the 43rd minute, Keenan completed a hat trick in less than nine minutes with her final tally coming at 58:13.
Mowery topper her previous career best save total by three. It was the most saves by a Bullet goalkeeper since Jessy O'Neill logged 22 against Ursinus on Oct. 25, 2003.
